Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win.
