Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
