Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
