Be clever, play smart, and pickup craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
