Be smart, play smart, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
