Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
