Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
