Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
