Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
