Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
