Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
