Be cunning, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
