Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
