Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
