Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
