Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
