Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
