Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
