Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
