Be brilliant, play brilliant, and master craps the right way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
