Be clever, play clever, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
