Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
