Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
