Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
