Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
