Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win.
