Be brilliant, play smart, and discover how to play craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
