Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
