Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
